Talk about the nootropics that for stress, anxiety and depression, and you have two very well-known names – Phenibut and Aniracetam. While both are prescribed for the same purpose i.e. anxiety, they work differently. In this post, we will try and understand the effects of both in detail.

What is Aniracetam?

Aniracetam was developed with the intention of treating cognitive impairment and memory issues by Hoffmann-La Roche. Further studies revealed that the nootropic might be useful for improving the mood of patients who suffer from conditions such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. If you go by what users have to say, many have claimed that Aniracetam does work as anti-anxiety drug, and it is believed that the drug can increase the levels of dopamine and serotonin. There are contradicting reviews as well. Some people have claimed that Aniracetam has only worsened the symptoms. Thankfully, Aniracetam is not addictive, so if one stops using it after a point, the side effects are minimal.

What’s Phenibut?

Phenibut, with origins in Russia, is a nootropic that’s prescribed for anxiety, insomnia and depression. If you compare this with some of the benzodiazepine drugs, it doesn’t produce that much-feared sedative effect. Chemically, it is designed to match GABA or gamma-aminobutyric acid, except that it has one phenyl ring attached to it. Much like GABA, Phenibut helps in reducing anxiety, but without affecting concentration and focus. Just in case you are thinking, GABA cannot work on its own as a supplement, because it cannot cross blood-brain barrier, while Phenibut can.

Comparing both

If you consider the side effects, Aniracetam is certainly a better choice than Phenibut. However, in terms of offering relief from anxiety, Phenibut is more effective. So, which one should you go for? Well, Aniracetam is ideal for people who are dealing with mild stress or anxiety.  Phenibut works better for people who just cannot stop thinking about a certain thing or are too anxious. With Phenibut, you have to be careful about not using it for a prolonged period, because your body will get used to it, and there can be withdrawal symptoms. At end of the day, drugs work in different way in different people, so it’s hard to draw conclusions.

If you consider the benefits for social anxiety, Aniracetam is better, but you might just have better access to Phenibut. Don’t forget to check some of the recent user reviews online.
